A historic city still lived in

Pingyao lies in central Shanxi. Its present urban form was shaped largely during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Walls, streets, homes, shops and civic buildings form a continuous historic landscape that remains part of everyday life.

In 1997, the Ancient City of Ping Yao, Shuanglin Temple and Zhenguo Temple were inscribed together on the UNESCO World Heritage List, linking urban form, temple architecture and painted sculpture within one cultural landscape.

Shuanglin Temple

Southwest of the ancient city, Shuanglin Temple is renowned for its extensive ensemble of painted clay sculpture. Its surviving halls and figures largely reflect Ming and Qing craftsmanship, with expressive faces, drapery and groupings that create vivid narrative space.

Zhenguo Temple

Northeast of the ancient city, Zhenguo Temple is centred on Wanfo Hall, built in 963. It is one of the very few surviving timber buildings from China’s Five Dynasties period. Its low roof, deep eaves and powerful bracket sets make the building a legible history of timber construction.

CITY CULTURE /

Trade moved through the lanes, and trust became the city's language.

Pingyao's cultural identity lives not only in walls and temples, but in the movement of merchants, clerks and escort agencies. Draft banks linked distant cities; biaoju protected the roads; courtyards held commerce, family and daily life together.

Biaoju and the trade routes

Once goods left the draft banks and merchant houses, biaoju took on the work of escorting, coordinating and reading the route. They linked city gates, way stations and distant markets, leaving a shared memory of travel, rules and loyalty.
